Our Team

Structure and Composition of the National Media Foundation – Since 1995

Established in 1995 as a recognized professional media organization, the National Media Foundation has dedicated nearly three decades to uplifting the professionalism of journalists, advancing media education, and contributing to social development.

Since its inception in 1995, the National Media Foundation has been governed by a Board of Trustees consisting of professional and academic experts. Under the guidance of this Academic and Professional Council, an Executive Administrative Board is appointed annually or biennially.

This executive body is led by the Chairman, Secretary-General, Treasurer, and Senior Executive Officers, who collectively ensure the Foundation’s administrative functions.

Chairman of the National Media Foundation (2025–2026)

Chandrapala Liyanage

Mr. Chandrapala Liyanage is a veteran media administrator with nearly thirty years of experience in the Sri Lankan media sector. He has served as:

  • Former Director General of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC)
  • Former Director General of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC)
  • Former Director General of Presidential Media
  • A senior international media adviser
  • Media administrator, media manager, and professional consultant

He brings extensive local and international experience in media management, communication strategy, and institutional leadership.

Secretary-General

Kapila Prasanna

Mr. Kapila Prasanna has nearly three decades of experience in the electronic media industry. His roles include:

  • Media administrator
  • Media manager
  • Television program producer
  • Former Program Director at Swarnavahini, one of Sri Lanka’s leading TV channels
  • Currently serving as the Channel Head of Rhythm TV (Rita Channel)

Prof. Dharmakeerthi Sri Ranjan

A media scholar and researcher at the University of Colombo. He has served as:

  • Former Head of the Department of Mass Media Studies, Sri Palee Campus, University of Colombo
  • Media researcher and author
  • International media dialogue consultant

Prof. Tiyude Weerasingha

A mass media researcher and author. He has served as:

  • Head of the Department, Sri Palee Campus, University of Colombo
  • Dean of the Faculty
  • Chairman of the Sri Lanka Press Council

Prof. Kamal Weleboda

Former Head of the Department of Mass Media Studies, University of Colombo. He is recognized as:

  • Author and media researcher
  • Radio program producer
  • International media dialogue specialist

Ven. Prof. Thampalawela Dhammarathana Thero

A Professor at the University of Sorbonne, France. He has served as:

  • Vice Chairman of the UN International Vesak Day Committee
  • Former Director of UNESCO (International Affairs)
  • Director of several international Buddhist communication and cultural institutes in France, China, and Germany
  • Director for Religious Affairs at the United Nations
